Translated from the book "Bestario Tradicional Portuges".
Boogymen
Bag man.
Is an old man with a vagabond look who steals children and transports them inside a sack that carries his back. When parents want to get rid of a child, they only need to tie a red ribbon to the leg of the bed to signal the Bag Man what it can take. Some men from the sack are known to use children to make buttons or soaps. Those slippery soaps, which run from our hands, are probably made of poorly behaved manners!
Maria Gancha.
When a child comes near a well, Maria Gancha tosses the hooks around her neck, dragging her to the bottom.
Maria Gancha is an evil being. It lives deep in the wells and has hooks instead of fingers. He spends his life under water in a dormant state and wakes up when someone throws a rock into the pit. By being disturbed by the impact of the stone, the Gancha awakens, climbs quickly by the rope of the well and launches at the person without mercy. He has a predilection for children who, inquisitive, have ventured near the wells. Instead of throwing stones into the wells, you might want to shoot a nail clipper!
Boogeyman (Papos?).
The boogeyman is an eater of rude children. It presents innumerable different forms, since it assumes the aspect with which each person imagines it. As soon as night falls, one listens to the sound of disobedient children. He especially likes to hide in stairwells, little used cabinets and other dark corners of houses. Very often, they can be found in lofts and attics. The biggest of them eat the whole children, all at once, without chewing.
Popular song to keep the Papos away. "Oh, Papa, go and get away from this roof, and let the boy sleep a restful sleep."
Coca.
Coca can take many forms and, many times, has a pumpkin head. Sometimes it only has a head, being devoid of the rest of the body. It sends fire through the mouth and nostrils. One of his favorite locals is the roof of a house where a child sleeps, where he watches over his behavior. It feeds on disobedient children, which leads to a place without return. In the Algarve, Coca looks almost human, covered with a hood, while in Monçao there is a party where the Coca-like fight against the Saint George is represented. The tradition of digging eyes and mouths of dreadful dread in pumpkins and practiced in Portugal for hundreds of years is not, as one might think, an influence of the celebration of Halloween. Besides being fun can give a good soup.
Insonho.
The most common cause of the hardships in which we dream that we can not move. The Insonho is a creature of many forms. He sits on top of a sleeping person, putting weight on his chest and causing him nightmares. Sometimes it covers the mouth of the sleeping person, causing shortness of breath. It always leaves room for some air to pass through its hand. It wears a cap is on the head. When someone move, the Insonho escapes to the roof and is obliged to surrender all the money that asks the person who has his cap. When he is in this situation, it will do everything to recover it. To avoid being bothered by Insohos, you should sleep with a fork under the pillow.
Maria da Manta.
Maria da Manta is a malevolent and scary being. It has horns and has fiery eyes. It lives in the rivers, where it attracts the children. When one of them gets out of the water, he will lay his hand on her and drown her. Maria da Manta hides under water, in shrubs on the banks of the rivers or at the top of the willows. (Depicted with horns, a skull head, fire coming out of the sockets and breasts. Some black ooze trickles down it's white skin).
Werewolves
First, a few details on translation. Courtesy of a person on tumblr. I won't name them because they said they got in trouble from the publisher trying to put the bestiary online. If they contact me saying otherwise they will be credited. These are direct quotes from them:
'"Corredores" (literally Runners) is the equivalent to Portuguese werewolves, with more of a person turns into animals, mostly wolves, kinda deal. Corredores being the name of the creatures here does not really work with another word.'
Onto the Runners then...
Peeira de Lobos (seems to translate as Peacock of Wolves?).
Peeiras are the female form of Runner. Unlike the others, their Fadario can not be broken, so the peeiras must live among the wolves. During the day they appear in their human form, commanding the packs. At night, they accompany the wolves transformed into the same animal, with whom it has the ability to communicate. The last of seven daughters will become a Peira. To avoid it, the oldest should be the godmother of the younger.
Almost all Portuguese packs have a Peeira that leads them. Rarely are sighted because they become a wolf as the smallest sign of danger.
Tardo.
Condemned to his fate, the Tardo wanders the fields, transformed into an animal or human form. The first phase of the male Runner is the Tardo. The Tardo is a mutant that can take the form of any animal, being the dog, the donkey, the wolf or the goat the most common. For this to happen, it must be sheltered naked at midnight at a crossroads where the animal has previously wasted (died? crapped? idk) or laid down. Before, they usually hang their clothes in the tallest tree. They are not dangerous, they only disorientate the people they meet and cause nightmares in the people who sleep. If you do not break your Fadario for seven years, you become a werewolf (lobisomem). The best nights to see a Tardo are on Fridays, the night of the Festa de São João do Porto nights with a full moon. The sound of a horse galloping in the middle of the night is often caused by a Tardo. A child can become bound to their Fadario if the godfather during the baptism does not say the right words. The transformation will take place before the age of communion, at age seven. The child before transforming hangs the clothes on the highest tree at a crossroads and becomes an animal.
Lobisomem.
The Werewolf is the second phase of the evolution of the Corridor and corresponds to a delay of more than 7 years. The differences between the Werewolf and the Tardo resides essentially in its ferocity. Unlike the Tardo, the Werewolf is known to marshal small animals, such as children and other small or defenseless humans. To end the curse, one mus bleed the werewolf, or shoot a bullet in its shadow. However, if the werewolf dies before finishing his ordeal, it will become a Corrilario. As werewolves can only run on right paths, it is preferable to walk through tortuous streets and roads, especially during full moon nights.
Corrilario.
Corridor a spirit that fulfills a punishment or a penalty, forced to wander the earth without right to eternal rest. The Corrilario is the damaged soul of a werewolf.
The Corrilario is the last known form of Corredor. Werewolves only turn to Corrilario if they die without solving/ending their deepest frustrations. The Corrilario has the form of a dog but only the Alma Penada of a werewolf. It behaves like any other Alma Penada. Contrary to Werewolves, the Corrilarios can walk anywhere at any time, with the moon having no effect on what day of the week they can go about or what paths they travel.
Animals
Thought Horse.
Appears to the aid of those who think of it with fine intensity. The Horse of Thought is horse-shaped, bat-winged, has fiery eyes, mouth and nostrils. When it is not flying at high speed, it usually lives in caves located in the mountains. It has the name Horse of Thought for coming to the aid of those who think of it with sufficient strength. It an be mounted by those who call it, and has the power to gather other thinkers and to provoke storms. It can not be considered simply good or bad, but it is known to have occasionally destroyed whole populations only by whim. Unlike other more numerous creatures, there is only one Horse of Thought.
Verdugo Barudo
The Verdugo Barudo are large snakes with large human beards. They hide among the stones and jump in the path of people. Some Enchanted Moiras assume this form when they are in certain phases of their enchantment. It was only in the northern interior region.
Dolly Berradeira.
The Hornet Fox is a fox-shaped soul that appears every seven years. It cries only after midnight or during midday. Only his screams distinguish him from a common fox. One should avoid laughing at this fox or imitate his gestures in the way of mockery, for whoever does so will be chased by the animal's remains to death. It was always sighted in the Algarve, in the Odelouca region.
The Bicho Cidrao
It is a creature that haunts a mountain on the island of Madeira. It is the union of the souls punished by a shepherd and his dog. Sometimes it is possible to hear their horrible screams coming from the top of the mountain, announcing rain or storm. He lives inside a cave and will not let anyone in, throwing sand and dust at anyone who tries. It has already happened that Bicho Cidrao has been seen to lead one or another herd, which, of course, does not belong to him. Bicho Cidrão is an imaginary being of the Portuguese legends in the region of Madeira that haunts a mountain, in the parish of Curral das Freiras, called the Montado do Cidrão. According to legend, the Cidrão animal was the soul of a shepherd. It is said that when the animal Cidrão shouts it is omen of rain or storm and that the animal Cidrão leads the flock without anyone sees.

Fairies and Witches.
Jas.
The Jas are very common and important Portuguese fairies. They are very small, the size of the human hand. They are spinners and live in the houses of the people, entertaining themselves, provided that the owners of the house let them stay by the fireplace at night, offer them, a skein of linen and a cookie, or bread and wine. If the person forgets to place the offering, the linen will appear all burned.
Hiras (or Horas).
The Horas are creatures shaped like a woman, with a very large head and slim body. The youngest of seven sisters in a family where there are no boys becomes a Hira. They turn into snakes on their 12th birthday. In the form of a snake, it will live in the sea.
Moiras Encantadas.
Encantadas Moiras are the most common supernatural creatures in mainland Portugal and live in places as varied as hills, caves, towers, caves, boulders, cisterns, ruins, dolmens, fountains, lakes or rivers. They can take the form of a woman or present a mixture of a woman and an animal, such as a snake. They love to sing while they comb their long hair, which may be blond or completely black, but always of irresistible beauty.143/5000 Often, the Enchanted Moiras are guards of great underground treasures and promise to lend them to those who release them from their enchantment. They do not always fulfill what they promise... It is common to find a Moira Fiandeira in the fields spinning, that is, creating thread from a piece raw flax using a distaff and a spindle. It is also common to see Enchanted Moiras carrying large boulders on their heads, with which they will create castles and other constructions. For much of their existence, Moiras live dormant in the places they inhabit and only reveal themselves when someone disturbs them. The enchantment of each Moira is broken differently. It can be through certain words or certain rituals, like returning 7 times to its hiding place. It is very easy to hear them, because their voices are our own echos. Enchanted Moiras should not be confused with the Moorish Princesses of other legends.
Witch Washerwomen.
The Washerwomen are witches who can be seen at night by lakes and rivers where they habitually wash clothes on the stones along the banks. They are easily identified by the sound they produce by striking wet clothes on the smooth stones of the banks. They wear white and can take on shapes other than human. And often they appear transformed into ducks or geese, on the top of the house roofs. Witches have the habit of calling people who pass by the rivers. The invitation should not be accepted, as they are unpredictable creatures and some mishap may happen.Witches sometimes hit the streets at great speed, usually at night, leaving behind a trail of little lights. When they meet someone, they give him a strong crack in the face. Often they are transported in a kind of ox- cart called "Carro da Codesseira" (can't translate), which is distinguished from others by the great squeak that it makes when it circulates. Mulheres Marinhas The Marine Women are a variety of mermaid that is found along the Portuguese coast. It has the appearance of a woman from the waist up. From the waist down, she has a scalloped fins and feet identical to that of a goat. Although they have a beautiful face, their ear lobes are huge and almost reach the shoulders, which distinguishes them from ordinary mermaids. No one has heard them speak, but they sing beautifully.
Velha Da Egua Branca. (Old White Mare)
The Old White Mare appears on her mare during full moon or moonlit nights. On her head she wears a white headdress with many red ribbons that resemble lightning. In her left hand she weilds a huge knife. As she passes through the fields, entertaining herself to bother the grazing animals, she produces an infernal noise similar to the sound of pots and pans. She is a good creature and the only creature capable of dealing with the terrible Iron Man.
Ghosts, spirits and demons.
The Borboinho (translates as whispers, seems to be a dust devil and a form of transportation, not an actual creature in itself).
Theyare small swirls of wind that carry with them some leaves and dust, very common in open plains and in corners of towns and cities. They can have several sizes and arise mainly at sunrise or sunset, at noon or midnight. They prefer summer. They may contain in their souls of the punished, witches or demons. To defend yourself from a Borborinho, you must throw open scissors into its interior, hoping that the witch or other entity that inhabits it leaves the inside and is temporarily harmless. The Borborinhos are a sort of means of transport in which they move fantastic creatures. In addition, they are disheveled, which is always annoying (?).

It has the appearance of very tall people, dressed in cassocks or shirts to their feet. The more you look at a Aventesma, the more it grows. If one looks long enough, the creature will grow so large that it forms an arch. When the Aventesmas are of this form, it is necessary to throw a shoe in its opening. If the shoe passes, you can pass under the bow and follow it will return to normal. If it continues to go backwards, passage is forbidden, and immediate misfortune will befall anyone who dares to break this rule.
Secular das Nuvens.(Secular Clouds, has nothing to do with religion, must mean something else.)
The Secular of the Clouds and the creature that causes the storms, controlling lightning and thunder, creating hail and great clouds, the Secular ones carry them by the heavens like a shepherd who leads their sheep. Sometimes the Secular of the Clouds are charred by the rays they produce and fall from the clouds to the earth. It dies slowly and in parts. They are known for their immense wisdom.
The Dianho.
Dianho is a devil who resembles a calf. And often seen in the company of witches, who kiss him (I'm guessing a form of the Devil that cohorts with witches).
Iron Hat Man (Or Iron Man).
Acolossal creature that has a huge iron hat buried in the head. He has a bronze body and a very shallow mouth. He wanders always accompanied by an animal, which can be a black pig, a huge deer whose antlers often exceeds the height of the treetops or a black rooster. It appears at midnight or when the roosters are singing. It appears on the roadside, under the trees and near the fountains. It takes revenge on the men who hate him by assaulting them and killing them. When he is enraged he releases flames all over his body. He has the power to stop the lightning of the storms with his own hands and to destroy everything around him. He is only afraid of the Old White Mare, always fleeing what he sees her.
Homem das sete dentaduras (Man with seven dentures).
The Man of the Seven Dentures appears around noon, especially when it is very hot. It is also known that he is a malefic, so the whole contract should be avoided. It is a good idea not to leave the house in the summer on hot days during the hottest hours.

Entreaberto.
The Entreaberto usually appears at midnight, at noon or on St. Joao's nights and instigates those he finds to dig holes in the ground in search of treasures. If the individual obeys him, he is lost, for he will soon be dead and buried in the pit opened by him. The only way to avoid this happening and respond to the Entreaberto; You dig, you dig. He has embers dangling from his back that cause death to anyone who looks at them. The noon, midnight, and night of St. John are known as the hours of Enteaberto.
Diminutive Creatures
Trasgos (goblins).
Goblins are common creatures. Of small stature and mischievous spirit, they are, in many respects, similar to human beings. They live inside people's homes are active especially at night, when everyone is sleeping. They devote themselves to mischief: they drag furniture and change to position of objects. Most Goblins wear a red garment. They may, though rarely, take the form of objects, such as small wooden benches or other small pieces. There are goblins throughout the national territory. They are wrongly mistaken for Gnomes. At most, they are relatives of the Duendes.
Fradinho da mao Furada (Pierced hand?)
Fradinho da mao Furada are as mischievous as the other Goblins, but more often they give favors and benefits to the human inhabitants of the houses where they live. They dress in a kind of habit and wear a red cap. They are distinguishable by the hole in the palm of their hands. Sometimes during the night, they enter the room where someone sleeps, and they cover their mouths, causing nightmares, as do the Insonhos. Fortunately, people never run out of breath, being able to breathe through the hole in the palm of their hands. They can multiply the assets that people have in the pantry and even help them find treasures that are hidden inside or through their home.
Maruxinhos.
The Maruxinhos are Goblins in their wild state. While the Common Goblin has adapted to the domestic environment, the Maruxinhos preserve characteristics that allow them to live outside, usually in old ruins or caves. Like the other goblins, they are small. They are sleek, has wrinkled cheek and sharp claws. They are smart and wily. They are known for treasures in the ruins where they live. The famous Golden Calf may be hiding in one of these locals. Maruxinhos prefer to go out at night from their hiding places.
The Moirinhos.
Very similar to the Goblins, distinguished from them by their huge eyes, which give them a sweet and childlike appearance. Another characteristic that distinguishes them and the fact that these charming Moirinhos are not domesticated. As a rule they are seen on the street, sitting on a wall or next to a tree. When people see a Moirinho, they can rarely resist holding them in their arms to take them with them. However, the longer the Moirinhos are carried in their lap, the heavier they become, until they become an unbearable burden, which is why no one until today has been able to take one of these Moirinhos with them.
Labregos.
The Labregos are small beings who live part of the time in the sea and another part hidden in the bushes. They leave the sea for the land once a year and all at the same time, usually in the first days of February. It is a spectacle to behold that is both beautiful and terrifying, because the many Labregos appear from the interior of the waves of the sea and advance inland without anything and nobody can stop them. In their arms they carry pieces of wood that have spent hundreds of years in the bottom of the sea. Some reports claim that garlic is effective at scaring them away.
Giants
Olharapos.
Olharapos are giant creatures that may have one eye in the middle of the forehead, three eyes or even two eyes forward and two at the nape of the neck. Extremely violent, they feed on everything they find, from cattle to humans, preferring, however, the little ones. It has a lot of strength, but little intelligence. They live in huts or huts built by themselves in the middle of the bush. Whoever wears an "Invulnerable Shirt" or "Relief Shirt" will be free from the danger posed by these creatures as well as from other dangers. The Invulnerable Shirt is an object with magical properties that should be woven and made in one night.
The Almajonas.
Creatures that look like very tall women. They usually carry their children on their backs. When she has a young son, she throws him out.
The Bismarmas.
Huge creatures, awkward and disproportionate, much larger than the Olharapos or the Almajonas. Their size allows them to cross rivers in just one pass. They do not wear clothes they sing very monotonous songs in a horrendous scream.
